The Hopi are American Indians people who primarily live on the 12,635 km˛ (2,531.773 sq mi) Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona.
The word "Hopi" it's pronounced "hope-ee," and it means "peaceful person" or "civilized person" in the Hopi language.
The Hopis live on a reservation, which is land that belongs to them and is under their control. The Hopi Nation has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country. However, the Hopis are also US citizens and must obey American law.
In the past, the Hopi Indians had a theocratic government. That means that the head priest or kikmongwi of each village was also the town chief. Today, each Hopi village still has its own kikmongwi, but he is primarily a religious leader. The Hopi nation is now led by an elected tribal council.
2012 Hopi Indian Blue Star Prophecy
The Hopi Indians refer to the Blue Star Prophecy as being a message from the Gods in relation to the end of the world. It is believed by some Hopi elders that all of the 9 signs of the end have arrived, and that they will be saved from the nuclear war or other doomsday scenerio that will devastate most of humanity. The Hopi Indians do not claim for this to happen in 2012 or within any predictable timeframe, but many are concerned. They believe that a white-skinned man named Pahana will come bearing the proper symbols and piece of stone tablet when the time is right to aid in the transition to the fifth and final world.
